[at-l] Mt. TR (was) Mt. Reagen

1) If I remember right, TR was one of the "nicknames" he often went by.
Like LBJ, JFK, and FDR. Some presidents get the intials and some (like
Truman, Bill, Jimmy Carter...) do not.

>From a site on TR:
"Nicknames: "TR"; "Trust-Buster"; "Teddy""

2) There ought to be a lot of mountains named after him. He probably did
more to promote conservation than most presidents:

A quote from an article about Bruce Babbit (sp?)
"It was the celebrated Republican and former governor of this great state,
and one of my personal role models,Teddy Roosevelt, who gave birth to
conservation in America," said Babbitt.

"He warned that if we lost our wilderness we would lose our vigor, our sense
of the rugged, natural beauty ofthis nation. He warned against the waste and
the imminent, rapid exhaustion of our natural resources. And hewarned
against the pollution of our air, rivers and lakes that he saw at the turn
of the century."

"But now," said Babbitt, "the newly elected Congress has ignored his
warnings, they have turned their back onTeddy Roosevelt's conservation
legacy. So it is our task to remind them that conservation is not, and never
hasbeen, a narrow, partisan cause, but rather a broad-based, moral and great
American victory."

And from an essay by Daniel Filler
"As president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt made conservation a
central policy issue of his administration. He created five National Parks,
four Big Game Refuges, fifty-one National bird Reservations, and the
National Forest Service. Roosevelt advocated for the sustainable use of the
nation's natural resources, the protection and management of wild game, and
the preservation of wild spaces. Considering America's landscape to be the
source of American wealth and the American character, Roosevelt believed
conservationism was a democratic movement necessary to maintain and to
strengthen American democracy."

And from an essay by TR
"It is entirely our power as a nation to preserve large tracts of
wilderness...as playground for rich and poor alike, and to preserve the
game...But this end can only be achieved by wise laws and by a resolute
enforcement of the laws. Lack of such legislation and administration will
result in harm to all of us, but most of all harm to the nature lover who
does not possess vast wealth. Already there have sprung up here and there
through the country, as in New Hampshire and the Adirondacks, large private
preserves."

Too bad there is not a mountain somewhere in the middle of the AT to name
for TR.

Teddy has a mountain in the Adirondacks. The designation is too new to
appear on the USGS map but a couple of years ago a previously unnamed peak
was designated "TR Mt." in his honor. No, I don't know why they used just
his initials. TR Mt. is a side trip (bushwhack) off the Van Hoevenberg
trail to Mt. Marcy.

Did you know there's no Mt Roosevelt in the Presidentials?
Too bad the Bull Moose Party isn't in control of New Hampshire politics.
