"Del Doc" Back on the Trail and Heading for Katahdin
Dr. Vernon Vernier ("Del Doc") began the second leg of a detailed GPS survey
of the Appalachian Trail on March 20. Having successfully surveyed the A.T.
from Springer Mountain, Georgia, to Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania, along
with a substantial portion of Vermont in 2002, "Del Doc" hopes to finish the
rest of Trail this year. He is starting in New Jersey and heading north to
Katahdin, Maine. He is hiking with a high-end Trimble Global Positioning
System (GPS) unit and collecting locational and tabular data on the Trail,
shelters, parking areas, and other important features. That information will
help ATC create more accurate maps, conduct better geographic analysis, and
