[at-l] RE: Drying soy

I'm impressed by the Walton Feeds variety and "reasonable" prices. But one of
the attractions of backpacking for me is the sense of self sufficiency. Though I
cheat a lot, one goal for me has been to minimize the costs of backpacking. I
suppose this began when I had three children over a span of five years, while
earning a low middle income salary. It became a challenge to spend a week on the
trail without in any way impacting our household budget.

So my "hobby" over the years has been to eat well on $2 a day -- or less, if
possible, while on the trail. As mentioned in earlier posts, I do that mostly
by using generic 60 cent a pound rice, $1 a pound generic oatmeal and 40-50
 cent a pound pasta.

That puts Walton Feeds pretty much out of the ballpark, because a quick scan
showed most of their offerings range from $3 plus to $5 plus a pound, though
soy's protein value is certainly a consideration.

But King Arthur Flour

sells soy flour for $2.25 a pound, which is more in the range of my self imposed
"hobby" trail budget. I don't know how the nutritional equivalents come out, but
I suspect they may be about the same -- though with King Arthur you have to add
the cost of flavorings. (pretty minimal in my experience.)
