I don't. And that's the problem with this discussion. YOU cannot separate
the man from his idea. One of his ideas that is. I'm sure that he had
others of value as most of us do. If the ideas are good, they live on after
us but they *aren't us*. They take on a life of their own just as our
children do. To bind our children's and grandchildren's lives to a set of
rules we proscribe before dying is to limit their growth. The AT has it's
own life beyond the original conception of MacKaye. Like the basic
principles that a good parent instills in a child, MacKaye's idea guides
those who maintain the AT but there is a difference between guidance and
strict adherence.
