I can't comment on bus schedules. But a mid April start is almost ideal. The
shelters will tend to be full, but I suspect not significantly more so than in
mid March.

At least when I started on April 13, 10 years ago, I sensed I was among the
stragglers, not the leaders. To this day most of those I meet from the class of
'93, seem to have started and finished well before I did. Regardless, the trails
are almost never crowded, except possibly for a day or two in the Whites in late
July-August. But April is a truly wonderful time to explore the southern
Appalachians.
