[at-l] History Along the AT Thread Revisited

Yesterday I got a copy of "Backpacker's Magazine Guide to the Appalachian
Trail" by Jim Chase. Mr. Chase includes historical notes on various points
along the trail. Sample: "...look out over the French Broad River at Hot
Springs, North Carolina and pretend that you are there in 1540 watching
DeSoto and his train of hundreds of Spanish warriors - and literally
thousands of pigs - cross the gap looking for gold." This is from the
chapter on "History along the Trail" but he also includes historical notes
in each of the section descriptions which are covered from North to South.
The book is out of print. I bought this copy on Ebay but I checked and
copies are available through Alibris and Biliofind.

War reporting 'quote of the day': Anchor talking to reporter in Northern
Irag covering Airborne takeover of an airport asks how big is this airport?
Response "I'm no expert but I think it's big enough to land planes here".
Maybe that's why they call it an "airport". ;)
