[at-l] trail related computer question

I have a friend who is thinking about long section hiking the AT during
their summers off.  But they would like to carry a computer.  I am not that
familar with computers in a hiking environment to be able to suggest one.
They are particularly interested in weight; battery life; ease of getting
new batteries or recharging; size of memory -- particularly for storing
documents, books...; connectibility through libraries and motels, etc.
They are not a gamer -- except for Solitary games.

Also, how easy is it to find a place to print out one or more pages?

NOTE:  Do Not Suggest Pen & Paper.  That is not a consideration.  It won't
fit in with their needs or plans.
