[at-l] "Stealth Guide" question

Subject: Re: [at-l] White Mtns. Stealth Guide executive summary

"1) Trail intersections (Walk 10' off the AT)
2) Mountain tops (Big glorious slabs of rock)
3) Separate Meals and Sleeping (Sleep Dry)
4) Fresh Maintenance (Cuttings telegraph sites)"

Why not just walk down below treeline, where you can camp
legally almost anywhere? TJ

###
1) Who said I'm above treeline? Most White Mtn. "AT" summits
aren't.
2) "...legally almost anywhere" just below treeline includes
krumholtz so thick you can't step off trail to pee, let alone
find a footprint in which to lay down.
3) White Mtn summits tend to be flat, while the slopes leading
there tend to be quite steep -- and reducing to zero any
reasonable expectation of finding a flat spot (even just to lay
down, i.e., bivy sized) on which to sleep.
3) Lastly, as previously stated, on those big glorious *barren*
slabs of rock, you've disturbed nothing in sleeping there,
whereas in vegetated areas you cannot avoid steeping on
*something* organic, and likely injuring it.
4) Whoops, a fourth: the views. Awesome.
