I think the mileage is pretty similar -- maybe a mile or two longer, starting at
Roaring Brook. I find the hike to Chimney Pond and then either the Saddle or
Hamlin Ridge Trails to the summit, easier than Abol. Plus you get to see more of
what is truly the greatest mountain in the East. The view of the Katahdin head
wall from Chimney Pond is the most spectacular mountain scene east of the
MIssissippi. YMMV.
