[at-l] Trail of Tears

Some might argue that the Trail of Tears actually begins in North Carolina,
not too far from the intersection of US 64 and US 74 in Murphy, near what
was then Fort Hembree. I actually had the opportunity to meet a man whose
family lived in the house that had served as a headquarters for the US Army.
(He was in his high 80s when I met him some three years ago.) When the house
was being demolished, he had the boyhood recollection that people went in
and found boards where the some US Army soldier had scrawled that the
Cherokee and the soldiers got along well and that both had a sense of
foreboding, one about the trip and the other about the wrongness of it all.

If you're ever near Robbinsville hiking in the Snowbird
Mountains --Robbinsville is down NC 143 from Stecoah Gap (now this post is
"trail related") -- allow a little time to visit Chief Junaluska's grave.
