[at-l] Food tidbits

What is the popular wisdom on the power bar type products? Or
other tidbits of wisdom?

1) If you look in the archives for autumn '98, I posted a
proportional nutrient analysis of Power Bars versus GORP. I
really wanted -- even *expected* -- Power Bars to win. I thought
it would be a logical, cool, techno-aid to the ever-present
search for trail fuel. Wrongo. As a fuel, GORP beats the bejesus
out of Power Bars (etc!) in pretty much every category,
excepting additives like Vitamin C/E, etc. But as far as caloric
density: GORP. Sodium? GORP. Potassium? GORP. Fiber? GORP.
That's the big four right there: calories, sodium, potassium,
fiber. Big fuel, big salt, big poop. Yer sussed.

2) Caloric recovery. Everybody's heard the phrase "Pasta-" or
"Carbo-loading" to describe what distance runners do before a
big effort. What conventional wisdom has *really* fallen down on
is the necessity of carbo-REPLACEMENT. You need to REPLACE the
calories you consume, in like (carbohydrate) manner, in your
muscles if you want to recover quickest from your day's efforts.
(And believe me, you WANT to recover, and quick-like.) Think of
it this way: if you're preparing dinner, and you've got the
choice between two helpings of pasta or one helping of pasta and
one helping of protein, take the double pasta. Your legs will be
less sore, stronger, and last longer the next day.

3) Aside from 1) and 2), listen to your gut. Your body knows
what it needs, and it will tell your gut. Pay attention, and
repeat successes and avoid repeating mistakes.
