[at-l] dogs/ re Baxter State Park

 Hi Shari
When you exit the 100 Mile Wilderness at Abol Bridge you will be over 30
miles from the nearest (and only) kennel. As you know, there are no dogs
allowed in Baxter. (Last official dog visit was by Orient, a seeing eye dog,
who was almost stompped to death by a moose.) Due to some very poor behavior
by some recent AT hikers, the Rangers are very intent on preventing any dogs
being snuck into the Park.
The kennel is open only a few hours in the early morning and late afternoon,
and is several miles down a side road. A pretty hard hitch with a dog. There
are a few nice folks in Millinocket who will board dogs for a few days, but
you'll need to hitch from Abol Bridge 11 miles to the nearest pay phone or 20
miles into town to try to contact them.
Details on dog boarding may be found at www.aldha.org in the on-line
Companion.
