I just bought a new tent (Eureka Zeus II Exo) that I
hope will outlast my AT hike.  So I think I'll invest
the $$ and weight into a ground covering.

Nice tent.
I've cut up an old 'family' sized tent. I use the no-see-um screening for
mosquito netting when sleeping in lean-tos, and cut into 4" circles as
pre-filters on my water bottles. One wall and half the floor were sewn into a
sleeping bag cover, and the other half of the floor is a ground cover.
