[at-l] My Upcoming Hike Gear List

The company I work for just finished building a fancy new
Hyatt Regency down near Palm Springs, CA so I'm headed down
there in a few weeks. I'm going to head out to the PCT
after I take care of business. Here's my gear list for my
upcoming PCT section hike with my buddy Tony:

Notes:

I may run into some pretty cold temps at night in February
on the PCT down there but if I was leaving for an AT
thru-hike March 1st this is about the gear I'd be taking.

Normally I wouldn't take a tent ground cloth but Tony and I
both got socked so badly with cactus when we were on the
Arizona Trail in Year 2000 I'm taking some Tyvek with me.
If we hit a warm dry spell on the PCT in a few weeks I
might forego the tent and just sleep on the Tyvek. It's
just a reconoiter trip so I have a little more than I might
take for oh...say a thru-hike.

The mylar sleeping bag is something I take with me always
now since it once saved my butt bigtime. Same goes for the
OR Hydraseal stuff sack for my down sleeping bag.

The cable lock is also something I've gotten used to
carrying too -- even though on this trip I may not run into
a situation that would require it.

I wouldn't normally carry a cell phone on a hike (hate the
things!) but I don't know for sure how I'm going to get
back to the rental car once this section hike is over. So I
may need to hitchhike or call someone at the office to
drive over and pick me up if there's a signal available.

Usually in wintertime I take a full-length Thermarest with
me rather than my usual 3/4 Thermarest (woo, cactuses
beware). Not exactly knowing what I might encounter I'm
taking along one of those cheap light closed cell 3/4
length foam pads too to put under the Thermarest (this is
what one would do in the Midwestern wintertime so that's
what I know). Might not really need it if the weather is
warmer than I'm expecting.

I take a spare hipbelt buckle with me too because I had one
break on me in the cold and it caused a problem trying to
hike with a broken hipbelt across mountains out in the
middle of nowhere. The buckle only weighs a couple of
ounces so it's no big deal to me.

Ask if you have questions.
