I didn't hear of anybody having problems hitching from Newfound Gap
into town this past season.  I did hear of several people having
trouble hitchhiking from Gatlinburg back to the trail.  You have to
walk out of town and outside the city limits (just a block or two)
before you stick your thumb out to avoid trouble with the local
authorities.

The outfitter in town may provide shuttles.
