Chainsaw pretty well covered it. I will add that I wear both synthetic and
natural so I have some experience with both. My preference is a silk t-shirt
with a SmartWool zip-up shirt, and Either silk or Patagonia silkweight
boxers with SmartWool pants.
The pants are REALLY iffy. I find that I rarely ever need them while hiking,
especially climbing in snow with a forty five pound winter pack. On the
other hand, if I know I will not be moving constantly, such as climbing,
where long periods will be spent on belay followed by a similar period of
actively climbing, I usually wear the SmartWool pants under just GoreTex
shell pants.
