[at-l] dumbest things

Boy, I carried and used a cable lock the whole way in Year
2000. Had plenty of times I thought I needed the cable lock
too. I carried a Coleman cable lock which weighed about 4
ounces or so.

For instance, in Shenandoah National Park at one of those
bigtime waysides where they refused to let any kind of
backpack inside the building (but 'residents' could bring
their backpack inside). I ended up chaining my backpack to
a railing outside. Lots of foot traffic at this place with
an easy getaway for thieves. I saw some scrufty looking
characters there who didn't happen to be hikers too.

Also in Salisbury, CT (I think it's CT) couldn't bring my
backpack inside the pharmacy building when it was raining
cats and dogs outside so I chained it to a post with the
rain cover facing up. Lots of foot traffic there too, even
in the pouring down rain.

I don't think there was a time when I "stashed" (hidden) my
backpack anyplace. I always tried to take it with me
wherever I went -- inside or out. Heck by the time I got to
Hot Springs my backpack was such a carved part of my body
that I'd start to feel uncomfortable if I was without
something heavy hanging off my back.

For me, I would definitely consider taking a cable lock
again. Not much weight for a little bit of security.
