There's a few you can pick from not too far from Asheville, such as Max
Patch, Big Bald.

I'm not sure how close you can get to Max Patch this time of year with the
snow and ice, but it's a short hike from the closest gap. Big Bald is about a
12 mile roundtrip hike from Sam's Gap, but only a 45 minute drive.  If you
have a four wheel drive you may be able to get close to Street Gap and knock
off maybe 4 miles hiking.

Jane Bald is a nice one too, but nearly a three hour drive from Asheville to
Carvers Gap and about 4 miles round trip hiking.

Beauty Spot has great views and not too far from Asheville, but I'm not sure
of the mileage offhand.

For the most part, the BR Parkway is closed, so the ones off that are out.
