If a permanent semi-flexible rubberized coating is desired, Plastidip
will work. I took some heavy-walled fuel hose that was a very tight fit
on the end of my surplus $2 ski-poles, got about an inch of the pole tip
jammed in the hose, with a quarter inch of the hose extending beyond the
tip end, and dipped the pole end in red Plastidip. It's fun to go to the
marine-supply store: "I need a foot of A1-317 Fuel line for my
ski-poles, please."
