Yup, and your friend that hiked 2092 miles wouldn't be considered a
"thru-hiker".  Yet they could have hike easily the entire 90 mile Wonderland
Trail AND be considered a thru-hiker.

And if your friend didn't explain to every Tom, Dick and Jack that they
previously hiked the Smokies and Tom, Dick and Jack and they saw your friends
name in the next spring edition ATN, they'd be considered a lying cheat.

All sad, but thru!
