NGS published two books:

"The Appalachian Trail" - (1972)Ronald Fisher
"Mountain Adventure - Exploring the Appalachian Trail" -(1988) also by
Fisher

The 1972 book was good but the 1988 had much better photographs in it.  I
have them both in my library.
