First , my wife and I are section hikers and are accustumed to carrying cer=
tain items that most thru hikers would not consider. Secondly , most of our=
 hiking is done  during the fall and winter when the days are getting short=
er. We discovered by accident that mice apparently don't like the candle la=
ntern that we sometimes use to make the long nights bearable. So now , we c=
arry a supply of 9 hour candles to use when we do stay in a shelter and   i=
t seems to work . Works for us , we think .
