[at-l] Gortex boots--is it worth it?

I've being using a pair of Goretex Vasque Clarions for about four years now=
, have worn them enough that their gonna need resoling soon, and:

- my sweat prone feet are much drier after a long day than with non-GT boot=
s or hiking shoes.
- GT is really appreciated on dew soaked mornings.
- have had no problems with poor performance when dirty. I do wipe them out=
with damp paper towels or TP when stuff gets inside.
- no problems with the liner breaking down.
- they really do as advertised for me, no oatmeal socks on rainy or snow da=
ys.

All that said, there are those, especially out west, who think that Goretex=
boots are a giant ripoff. I've hiked a fair amount in New Mexico and can =
see their viewpoint in a more arid climate. BUT, after a few mornings in th=
e green tunnel of Virginia's summer, I wonder if some might, just possibly =
might, be open to an opinion change.

All above is for me and my feet...your tootsies may vary.

Skippie...

First, I tried looking for information about this in the archive but didn't
have any luck.
I'm just trying to find out if it's worth getting the gortex lining on
hiking boots. It seems like my feet are going to get wet no matter what
when I'm on the AT in 2003, so why bother with the price? Plus, gortex
takes forever to dry out once it does get wet.

Also, I was looking at the Vasque Clarion Impact. Any opinions? I was
planning on starting out w/ this midweight boot and switching to a trail
runner in the summer.

thanks in advance,
Clair
