Lafayette Place CampGround is in Franconia Notch.  Great hikes right from the
campground.  Very popular.  I'm not certain about how you make reservations
but you will probably want to do that.  Although, September should not be as
hard to find a place to set up a base camp.   There are numerous campgrounds
all through the Whites.   There is an information center in Lincoln New
Hampshire (10 minutes from Franconia Notch) that will have a list of
campgrounds and available space.  You should not go wrong in finding a place
in September.
