Not necessarily impossible.  You could for example have additional
researchers use the same research technique as used in the original study
to check different thru hikers to see if the same results are again found.
New researchers might come up with different results using the same techniques.
For example, maybe the original researcher was faking the results.
Things like this have happened before in research science.  Or maybe
his statistical sample was too small, or maybe he was careless.
