Nov. 24, 2002 -- A 16-year-old metro Atlanta girl is in critical condition
after she was shot by a hunter this morning in the North Georgia mountains.
Rachel Ferguson, a student at Bartow County High School, was hiking on the
Appalachian Trail about 7 a.m. when she was hit once in the abdomen, her
father said. She was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in North Fulton County,
where doctors attempted to remove the shotgun bullet. The Union County
Sheriff's Office is interviewing the unidentified shooter to determine
whether charges should be filed. Ferguson's family gathered at the hospital
awaiting word on her condition. They said Ferguson was hiking with a group
of teens when the shooting occurred. Ferguson's father said the hunter must
have been "shooting blind," or without a specific target. "How can a hunter
be hunting on the Appalachian Trail and not see a human being?" Terry
Ferguson said.
