Because at its root, this is an issue of political
ethics. The people who have in the past argued for
public control of natural treasures, and believed that
whatever they could get away with politically was
just swell (under the justification that "it's the
will of the people," "a constitutional process," or
because "it's always been done this way") need to
take a long, hard look at what their premises have
led to in Yellowstone. Something similar may yet
happen to the Appalachian Trail.

Were people so myopic that they didn't see a Dubya
coming?
