[at-l] tongue depressor foam thingy?

I'm not sure what you mean. A tongue depressor (not that little wooden
thing your doc uses to look at your pharynx) is a hard foam slab that
pushes against the tongue of your boot, pushing your foot toward the
heel cup more securely. It shouldn't do much for the ball of your foot,
unless it is sliding in a too large boot and missing cushion from the
insole. Insoles do wear out and go flat. Socks can provide additional
cushion, unless you make the mistake of wearing cotton socks.

Have you been to a good boot fitter?
