[at-l] WINGFOOT...

"... after a year in which the AT-L barely whispered his name, he (Wingfoot)
writes an editorial slamming our good name." says Pittsburgh.

I think most of us are aware of Wingfoot's failures. A few of us recognize his
counter-balancing successes.

Wingfoot has devoted the latter years of his life on behalf of what he believes
is the good of the trail -- first as a volunteer; later as a fulltime advocate.
The trail is his life and his livelihood. Judging from outside appearances it is
a very meager livelihood.

Obviously his dreams for a vast new organization devoted to protecting and
improving the wildness of the trail, have failed. He struggles by on the
remnants of a grand idea.

I'm more saddened than angry at Wingfoot. I hate to see a grand, important and
innovative idea fail -- even when the author of the idea must share in the
failure.
