>From "Hiking Trails of the Smokies" (isbn 0-937207-15-2) pub. 1994, updated=
1999. Pg. 69.
A description of the trail and history of the area on the AT from Tricorner=
knob to Low Gap
" Past Inadu Knob, the trail descends almost 800' in the next mile, tunneli=
ng through rosebay rhododendron much of the time. Many pieces of twisted m=
etal are grim reminders of the crash of an Air Force F-4 jet on January 4, =
1984. There were no survivors; the pilot and navigator evidently mistook t=
heir elevation and smashed into the mountain at high speed. People as far =
away as Newport Tennessee, reported hearing the thunderous explosion. "
