Someone mentioned the quote that, about thru-hiking
from Georgia, once you've reached Maine you've done 90
percent of the miles and 50 percent of the work. I
think that's absolutely true.
The Whites can be a bitch, but I think Western Maine,
between the state line and Monson, is just brutal.
Granted, it's also spectacularly beautiful, but by the
time I was through with that stretch my knees were
shot. That stretch physically wore me out much more
than the Whites did.
The 100-Mile Wilderness is remote, but the hills don't
smack you upside the head like Western Maine does.
Maybe I'm a masochist, but I can't wait to get back
there ...
