Exactly! And while Shane may not remember it, I responded to his analysis
of the MacKay article with a similar thought. Specifically, regarding the
reasons that drove MacKaye to form the Wilderness Society.

Frankly, arguing abou the communist/socialist underpinnings of MacKaye's
original article hold about as little interest for me as does suffering
through the movie Reds a second time. Which is to say none. Thankfully,NOT
ONE was sucked into that kind of discussion.

On the otherhand, his vision of wanting to keep the trail in a wild state
that evolved over decades is worth talking about, IMHO. The current
leadership at the ATC seems to be furthering that part of Mackaye's vision.
They have not declared victory, but continue to protect the AT experience
with thier work to protect viewsheds, for example. And view shed protection
is very relavant.

Personally, I like to hear about Weary's work protecting viewsheds. T I
can't figure out why others are so intent on doing battle rather with that
proposition. I can understand why he is a puzzled by the reaction on this
list. Its weird. One of AT-L's most respected and prolific listers has
even adopted a pseudoname to continue the battle with Weary over on the TA
list. What's up with that? Zorro fantasies? I don't get it.
