Try again, maybe.  It's a very "British" style of writing.
I didn't care for the aristocratic trappings -- the long
names, the genealogy, etc.  Not to mention the elvish
poetry <g>.

I had the same reaction, but -- it grows on you.  It's
pretty deep, actually, and withstands several readings.

It's about the goodness of little people and the corruption
that power brings.  Very uplifting and all...
