I've got a relative (by marriage, thank GOD!) who calls the restaurant Shon=
eys Shah-nees, and I know half a dozen people who call the state to our Wes=
t Ill-ah-noise, and the place where you can borrow books the lie-bary.
Don't even get me started on how all of the older folks I know say the name=
Hawaii!
To keep this on topic, is it App-ah-lay-shun or App-ah-latch-un? It has be=
en my understanding that the term originated in the middle south and would =
therefore be pronounced accordingly, but don't know enough about the pre-tr=
ail history of the mountains to know how far north the term was used.

Hey, the rest of the country isn't any better.
Versailles, KY =3D ver-SALES
Cairo, IL =3D KAY-roh
New Madrid, MO =3D new MAA-drid
You'd think people who lived in places like these would know how
to pronounce their hometown's names. Sheesh!
