That is an error. Spinal/back problems usually get better, regardless
of what is done to/for the person. Bedrest or movement have fairly
equal response for pain and spasm reduction. Exercise, such as
stretching in Yoga, can help prevent further problems when also
associated with weight reduction and education to avoid behaviors that
increase risk of re-injury.

Massage can be extremely helpful for pain and spasm reduction. I prefer
a good physical therapist over a chiropractor any day of the week -
cheaper, less irradiation and better education regarding body mechanics
for prevention.
