I  think  the  bear  problem on the AT is greatly exaggerated. It's a problem in
National  Parks  where  hunting  is  banned and in New Jersey where a recovering
population is protected from hunters.

I  carry  fresh  meat routinely in Maine where hunters keep bears genuinely wild
creatures.  I've  yet  to hear of a bear problem in Maine outside of Baxter Park
(where hunting is also banned.)
