Yes, mouldering and composting privies are the same thing -- they're
both designed to promote aerobic decomposition. Regarding spelling,
I've always seen it spelt privy in the singular and privies in the
plural. When I was in Boy Scouts, we always used to call them latrines
or "the larry".
