I got this recipe from the 1936 guide book for the White Mountains.
If anyone knows where "carbolated vaseline" can be found, please let
me know. I was able to find a recipe for regular vaseline (paraffin &
mineral oil) and I know that "carbolated" relates to the use of
carbolic acid...
"Pinkham Notch Fly Dope. Not recommended for delicate complexions or
sensitive nostrils. Good for black flies and midges. Makes 1 pound. "
- 1936 AMC Guide to White Mountains.
1 large tube of carbolated vaseline
1 oz camphor
1 oz creosote
1 oz oil of pennyroyal
1 oz olive oil
2 oz citronella
3 oz pine tar
I imagine you just mix it up, put it in squeeze bottles and apply as
needed. Wonder if it works... --RD
