Jim,
I think you are refering to the Stephen Roy Carr case from 1988. While I
haven't read it, I understand that a book was written that centered on the
court proceedings, and gave some insight prosecution of high-profile capital
crimes.
The case I was referring to was the one from June 1998 where a young woman
was raped in the Michaux Forest allegedly by an ex-con not far from Tumbling
Run Shelter. His profile was much closer to the 10-foot tall raving maniac
rapipist with a gun/or knife. I say allegedly because while they caught
the suspect and brought him to trial, I never did hear if he was convicted.
As for him walking down the trail naked, or leaping from the bushes as
such, like I said, I am working from memory. I could be 100% wrong on that
detail. That part I just kinda-sorta remembered from old news accounts.
Regardless, this case is relavant to my original post because rape reports,
even if statistaclly aberations, must factor into how others COULD feel if
they see a guy in the buff.
In any event, on the AT I think a "blanket rule" should apply with regard to
hiking nude. Pun intended. Best to always keep it uder the covers.
Especially during hunting season, but thats another topic all together.
