Me too. I am beyond complacency over the idea that there was no
environmental advocacy until certain ATML refugees arrived. I recognize
arrogance and abusiveness in such attacks on our list. I recognize
nothing AT or AT-L related in catcalls over "leftist", "rightist",
"Damn gummint", "Christian", "Anti-Christian", "WF-haters", "WF-ists"
and related posturing.

We had a gentlemen's agreement to avoid unfruitful hot-button topics
such as WF, ATML, guns, umbrellas and cell phones. Occasionally someone
would interpret jack-booted government thugs behind any attempt to
obtain land for the AT. These conversations typically passed after a
bit of smashmellow burning, but the past year has resulted in a severe
case of Johnny One-Note stridency. Shane helped us demonstrate that we
could approach hot-button topics and remain gentlemen. Others have just
demonstrated self-rightious belligerance.

I, for one, am not giving up my sport because of these trolls. I may
give up the list, which will not be much of a loss as our list no
longer exists. I certainly am rethinking further participation
including RUCKs. I am very aware of other lists that appear to have
maintained a balance of advocacy and respect. I just fear that our
"trail advocates" are likely to follow and spoil any environment until
the entire universe of hiking is limited to ATML and narccistic
"Centers."
