[at-l] Ozone Warning on Clingmans

     Ozone Warning on Clingmans
     June 13 2002

With summer still over a week away, the Great Smoky Mountains National
Park on Tuesday issued its eighth ozone alert of the year.

The alerts are issued when levels of ozone in the Park exceed the
eight-hour federal human health standard of 85 parts per billion.

The Park recorded ozone levels of 101 ppb over eight hours Monday at
its monitoring station on Clingmans Dome.

Levels of 99 ppb were recorded at Cove Mountain, and levels of 94 ppb
were recorded at Purchase Knob. A one-hour level of 116 ppb was recorded on
Clingmans Dome at 3 p.m Monday.

The highest ozone concentrations are at high elevation areas of the
Park. Visitors, especially those with respiratory problems and the elderly,
should refrain from strenuous exercise until air quality improves.
In 1999, the Park recorded 52 days of unhealthy ozone levels, and
issued the most ozone alerts in its history. In 2000, there were 32
unhealthy days recorded. The Park enjoyed relatively clean air last year,
with only 14 unhealthy days being recorded.
