[at-l] Thanks

dont forget that MANY outfitters will rent gear like backpacks, sleeping
bags, tents etc so you can get some overnight trip experience w/o actually
buying much expensive gear to start.

also, the Campmor catalog & website.
www.campmor.com

I just peeked in and they actually have a pack on sale for $50.00. that
would be cheap enough for anyone to get some basic experience on and the
cost could equal a few rental fees, so not a bad deal. its also only 3lbs
5oz and decent size. may not be a bad deal, if you have a short torso as it
says its for smaller folks.

they usually have esbit stoves for around $5-10, also a cheap starter
alternative just to get out there.

cheerio

Right now, just go out on short day hikes (5 miles or so). Work up to
10 miles.
