[at-l] Grand Unification Theory - WAS:Survival was Trail Etiquette

I am not a big fan of all the lights we have around us, not just in the backcountry but in town as well. I am quite happy that the nearest street light at my house is several houses away. There is a very dark section of road just downhill from my driveway where I walk the dogs. I am very upset that the house behind me has what is basically a street light in their backyard and thus somewhat in mind. The fact that I have only seen them in their yard twice in two years and neither time at night. I have contemplated helping their light go out.

My car has headlights. I have a head light (Tikka). That seems enough for me. Everyone could afford a stack of Tikkas for what street lights cost. Then we could see the stars again.

ah, one of my pet peeves when I'm out with others - too many insist on
always using a flashlight in the dark. I find that more often than not I
can see much better without it, and you're right - without it the night does
encircle you. And it's wonderful. Not something to fear. Once you've
turned the light on, all you see and all you focus on is that little circle
of light. You lose so much! Flashlights do have their places and times,
but not just because the sun has set! I wouldn't leave home without one,
but I also spend much time in the dark without it on.
