[at-l] Auroras Tonight?

A fast-moving interplanetary shock wave swept past Earth at 1050 UT (6:50 a.m. EDT) on May 23rd and triggered an ongoing G3-class geomagnetic storm. Observers with dark skies should go outside and look for auroras.

The shock wave was the leading edge of a coronal mass ejection that left the Sun on May 22nd. In fact, it was likely a "cannibal coronal mass ejection" -- a combination of three rapid-fire CMEs visible in the movie above. Cannibal CMEs are thought to produce prolonged geomagnetic storms.
