It is not a major airport (a tad under a 100 fights a day), but Roanoke
(ROA) http://www.roanokeairport.com/ is an easy cab ride from the trail.

Tri-Cities Regional Airport (TRI) ( a tad under 50 flights a day)
http://www.triflight.com/ is 35-40 miles off the trail -- which is a lot
closer that DC.

Someone else pick up the story farther south.
