Re[4]: [at-l] future AT hiker

"... I believe I read some writer's book, from some Center someplace, that
suggested 8 mile days for 6 months completion time. So I made an memory,
estimation, or some other type of error."

Since we are in the business of giving advice to potential thru hikers, I think
it important to mostly report our experiences, rather than what we may have
read about what others speculate about the nature of thru hiking.

The length of the trail varies slightly from year to year. But if hikers figure
on 2,165 miles they won't be significantly wrong. That means to do the trail in
100 days, one must average (including days in town) 21.65 miles a day.

Committed and experienced long distance hikers can do such miles. Most can't.
Very few average such miles, especially during the first few weeks of a thru
 hike attempt.

Frankly, I've never done such mileage, ever.

But, I do believe that I could do a thru hike in six months, especially if a
job I thought important depended on it, though, like Rocky, it's been quite a
while since anyone has offered me a job that paid money.

Now, the other kind of job? I get those with increasing regularly.
