Obviously you don't have the proper amount of time for the task at hand. Eventually the water will freeze over or recede and then you can walk over. How long until the next ice age?

Or perhaps it is a footwear problem. With enough buoyancy in your shoes you could make it.

Or maybe your pack is too light. Try adding the weight of scuba equipment. That could keep your feet on the ground.
