i just received word that earl has died. for those of you that get these posts that do not know who earl was, he was the first person to hike the entire appalachian trail is one season, in 1948. it was a monumental feat. he hiked the trail again in the 60's, then again in 1998, his 50th aniversary hike, during which he turned 79 years old. he was a living legend to many of us. he was humble and modest, but we knew that he reveled in his acheivements, because many of us had the priviledge of seeing him smile. he wrote two books about his hikes, filled with pictures, prose and poetry. the latest book was just published a couple of months ago. he was crusty pig farmer - opinionated, funny, musical, and vertically challenged<g> - and he loved the people that he begate...

i will pass along the word of his death to the hikers out here...
