I always snicker over trying to save a few miles on the approach trail.  It 
reminds me of those who go around the lot 3 times trying to find a parking 
place closer to the store they want to go to.  You're going to hike a lot 
more than that to and from the trail to shelters, water and towns, to 
mention the trail itself.  Why not think of the approach as a chance to 
warm up your muscles for the real exercise?  Whatever.  HYOH.
