You got it all wrong Cliff ;-) !
What you have here is a case of littering. And littering along the Trail is
as low as it gets.
There a lot of us who can't stand that.
People have no fricking business leaving that kind of stuff beside the
Trail. I applaud the hiker for removing some of it. If he made a mistake
it was in not eating everything and packing out the cooler to the nearest
trash can. You just can't leave crap along the side of the Trail like that.
Hell, even the trail magicians shouldn't leave crap like that along the
Trail. If you leave a food stash along the Trail, it is the leaver's (rymes
with beaver's) responsibility to label the stash with dates and name rank
and hiker serial number, and keep it 100% animial safe (and by extension
hiker safe becasue we'e not gonna be to lazy to climb a tree, rip apart the
duct tape and/or und/or undo latches and cables or pick locks) and keep it
reasonably well hidden from view.
(FWIW, don't for get I put a smiley face on my first sentence. Here is
another one just in case it is needed: :-) There are always shades of
grey, but its more fun to post assuming everything is black and white. Of
course, common sense sometimes comes into play to. But this is a list, not
real life, right?)
